Company Officials admit they are “leaning” into AI, but initially didn’t say if the intelligence is responsible for job cuts.
Seattle-Based Zillow Dumps 500 Workers, 91 in Puget Sound Region
Zillow, founded in 2006, has announced the workers will be let go by October, including 91 in WA.
Corporate Officials said the cuts were necessary for Zillow to continue to “grow at scale,” but did not elaborate on that. However, they did say in a statement that shifts or activity in the real estate market necessitated the moves.
Who’s Losing Their Jobs?
According to Geekwire, product and engineering positions are the hardest hit, the cuts amount to about 7 percent of their global workforce of about 7,058 earlier this spring.
According to Geekwire:
“The cuts affect workers at Zillow Group’s headquarters at 1301 Second Ave. in downtown Seattle and employees working from home elsewhere in Washington. The company said in the filing that its headquarters will remain open. None of the affected employees are represented by a union.”
Despite rumors to the contrary, Officials told Geekwire AI did not play the big role in the layoffs. But the company has said they are “leaning” into the technology.
Zillow was the first online real estate company to offer free automated home value estimates, known in the industry as “Zestimets.”
