YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. — Yakima is celebrating Día de los Muertos this year with its sister city, Morelia, Michoacán, with free events, music, art and altars honoring the lives of loved ones who have died.
“This is kind of our sister city’s gift to the community,” said Clara Eustis, vice president of the Yakima Morelia Sister City Association. “We’d like to share a little bit of the culture of Morelia and our sister city.”
This is the 18th year the organization has featured a community altar exhibit, but this is the first year it’s been held inside an empty storefront at the Yakima Valley Mall in Union Gap.
The community altar exhibit at the Yakima Valley Mall will have a grand opening celebration from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 27 featuring a free concert by Bola Suriana — musicians from Morelia — followed by the Davis High School Ballet Folkloric .
The exhibit will the be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from Oct. 28 to Nov. 5 and will feature other events that include face painting, the West Valley Ballet Folkloric, Aztec dancers and a Catrina Fashion Show and Contest.
As part of the celebration, Washington Middle School students will be showcasing their Día de los Muertos artwork at The Seasons Gallery Bistro at 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. from Oct. 30 to Nov. 5.
Bola Suriana will also be giving a free performance at The Seasons Performance Hall from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 30. See a full calendar of events here.
