YAKIMA, Wash. — It was a busy weekend for police officers in Yakima; particularly on the traffic front. There were several vehicle pursuits, collisions and arrests made on October 1st and 2nd across the city.

1:00 a.m. on October 1: Yakima police officers observed a 2022 Polaris RZR Wheeled ATV speeding through the area of River Rd. from 40th Ave. They had reason to believe the ATV was racing another driver, leading them to pursue it.

At first, the ATV evaded YPD officers but decided to veer into the area of a warehouse near 27th Ave. The ATV driver struck a BNSF Railway embankment and flipped, sending two riders off the side of the vehicle.

Both the driver (Hardeep Chhokar, 22) and the passenger (Isaiah Harris, 25) died on impact from head trauma. Neither was wearing a helmet, and the cause of the fatal crash was determined to be a combination of reckless driving and speeding.

11:00 a.m. on October 2: YPD officers responded to reports of a man making threats with a handgun, but when they arrived, he allegedly tried to flee. The driver then lost control of his vehicle and caused a crash near the intersection of East D St & N 4th St. Neither of the occupants of the vehicle that was struck suffered injuries as a result of this incident.

He is accused of climbing out of the window to make a break for it, but the suspect was caught on the 300-block of N Naches Ave following a short foot chase. They transported the suspect to the Yakima County Jail, where he was booked on several felonies.

4:40 p.m. on October 2: Reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle drew police to the scene near the W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd Underpass. They learned that the pedestrian was walking in the middle of the street when an unsuspecting driver collided with the man.

He didn’t suffer major injuries, but responding parties insisted that he be medically evaluated due to the severity of the collision. The pedestrian was said to become very combative while being cared for at a nearby hospital, where he earned a charge for assaulting a registered nurse. No further details on this case were offered by Yakima authorities.

These are breaking news stories. An update and/or follow-up may be issued if further details are revealed.
