YAKIMA, Wash. — Six children were detained and later released outside of Davis High School on Tuesday afternoon when law enforcement and school officials received information that they might’ve been carrying weapons.
According to PIO Yvette Inzunza of the Yakima Police Department, a police officer was informed and sent to Davis High School on the 200-block of S 6th Ave around 2:10 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. They were informed of a potential threat of a firearm outside of the campus.

At this time, Davis High School was placed into what Inzunza described as ‘Secure and Teach protocols’ while the officer investigated. This was followed by a lockdown, which lasted about 40 minutes until 2:48 p.m. PST.
The responding police officer located a car nearby to the high school and made contact with six juveniles occupying it. They were all detained under suspicion of bringing a dangerous weapon to the school grounds.

That’s when the officer learned that the juveniles were in possession of a pellet gun and a flare gun — both of which are considered illegal on school grounds. However, due to the non-violent nature of their offense, the juveniles were later released.
In turn, the lockdown protocols were lifted and the rest of the afternoon proceeded as usual with students being dismissed at the end of their school day.
