When I was a kid, I loved the drive-in. I Remember My folks packing us all in the station wagon and going to Lou’s Drive-in for Burgers, fries and shakes in Burien. When I got to high school age was when the first McDonald’s showed up in Burien. At that time, you could actually get a complete meal for almost a dollar. (Try that now.)

A cheeseburger was about $0.33, Milkshakes were about $0.25, And the hot apple pie was $0.20.
Back then, the apple pie was basically a deep-fried hot pocket of apple goodness. The deep-fried version of the apple pie was discontinued in 1992 and was replaced by a baked version which was considered healthier.

But now, after over 30 years the deep-fried apple pie is back, and even though it might not be healthier, I for one am glad it’s back.

I couldn’t help myself.
I still had to try the fried apple pie at Mickey D’s. Yesterday was the first day that the deep-fried apple pie was made available at the Wenatchee McDonald’s and I couldn’t help myself, I had to get one.
I hit the drive through, picked one up (OK 2) and came back to work.
What was it like?
The first thing I noticed was that even after 15 minutes, the pie was still warm. The second thing I noticed was the crunch when I bit into it, (very satisfying) and the third thing I noticed was the taste of cinnamon in the background.
I have no idea if this is exactly like the original deep fried apple pie from McDonald’s from back in the day, but I do know this, I like it better than the baked version.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s time for a nap. (220 calories, baby.)
