West Richland, RSD awarded grant for school zone pedestrian safety project

WEST RICHLAND, Wash.-A recently awarded grant will allow the Richland School District and the City of West Richland to improve pedestrian safety in school zones throughout the community.

The $250,508 grant, from the Transportation Improvement Board is funded in part by Washington’s Climate Commitment Act.

“Ensuring the safety of our students is our top priority, and these improvements will significantly contribute to creating a safer environment for all community members.” said Dr. Shelley Redinger, Superintendent of the Richland School District.

According to the RSD, the project will focus on implementing improvements at multiple locations throughout the area, including the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons near Enterprise Middle School, Tapteal and William Wiley Elementary schools.

Construction is expected to start in summer 2024 and be done in time for the start of school in the fall.

“Ensuring the safety of our children as they travel to and from school is a responsibility we all share,“ said West Richland Mayor Brent Gerry. “The City of West Richland, together with the Richland School District, is committed to creating an environment where our youngest citizens can learn and grow safely.”
