Wapato middle school officials and several law enforcement agencies said an investigation uncovered that a student made a false report.
WAPATO, Wash. – The Wapato Middle School was put in lockdown Friday after it was reported a person was in the parking lot threatening to shoot up the school.
Officers from the Wapato Police Department, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, the Yakama Nation Tribal Police, the Toppenish Police Department and the Washington State Patrol all responded to the middle school when multiple reports were made.
While officers were on the way to the school, school officials issued a lockdown and gave a description of a suspicious vehicle that was in the parking lot.
When members of law enforcement arrived, they said they found a vehicle matching the description and found three people inside. Officers said all three people were detained, however, no weapon was found.
Officers investigated back at the middle school and said one student had started the rumor as a joke and other students believed it was true and reported it to their parents and school staff.
Authorities said no one will be facing charges in this case.
The Wapato Police Department said the Wapato School District and responding agencies were able to successfully investigate and bring the matter to a close efficiently.
