The centrist candidate, Betsy Johnson, a life-long Democrat who left the part in 2021 to pursue a more centrist, non-aligned view on the state’s politics, conceded on Tuesday night when it became apparent that the race was between Kotek and her Republican counterpart, Drazan.

“Over the last 30 years, I’ve been on the ballot 16 times. My record was a perfect 16 until now and while that winning record is now broken, I have absolutely no regrets and make no apologies for joining this fight for Oregon,” Johnson stated.

This position has been held by a Democrat for 40 years, and as Johnson stated in her Election Night speech, it’s been almost 100 years since an Independent candidate has not won this race in Oregon.

Despite the slight edge of less than 3% of votes in favor of Kotek, the race is still too close to call.

HERMISTON, Ore. — One of the tightest races in the entire U.S. Northwest during the 2022 Midterm Elections is between Tina Kotek and (D-OR) and Christine Drazan (R-OR), who are competing to become the next Governor of Oregon.

As of 9:30 p.m. PST on November 8, 2022, Kotek holds the lead over Drazan by 18,416 votes, which equates to roughly 0.015% of all voters in the state of Oregon. The entire Eastern portion of the state leaned in favor of Drazan, but two of the most populous cities, Portland and Eugene, favored Kotek.

An overwhelming 75% of voters in Morrow County voted for Drazan while approx. 70.9% of Umatilla County voters leaned toward Drazan.

One major wrinkle in the Oregon Gubernatorial Election was the inclusion of Independent candidate Betsy Johnson, who garnered roughly 9% of votes. Johnson, who had a 20-year career in the statehouse, quit the Democratic Party in 2021. Her politics offer some appeal to centrist and unaffiliated voters who lay somewhere in the political gray area.

Kotek recently received a boost when President Joe Biden visited Portland to offer his support and drive voter interest ahead of the pivotal race. It’s been 40 years since Oregon voted a Republican as its Governor, making the nail-biting finish between Kotek and Drazan all the more compelling.

KAPP-KVEW will continuously update our Election results page and share any breaking updates as we learn more about this heated race for the top position in Oregon.
