It’s wildfire season here in the Tri-Cities, and it’s already getting out of control before we even hit the first day of summer.

We had a mild winter, which sets us up for a dry and hot summer in the Columbia Basin.

So far, three wildfires are already burning near the Tri-Cities. Juniper Dunes, Walla Walla, and Benton City/Prosser area, just naming a few fires that our first responders are out combating.

The Tri-Cities Wildfire Checklist: Are You Prepared?

As I see the smoke clouds bellowing above, I thought some pre-wildfire tips might help keep your family safe here in the Tri-Cities.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, here are some tips you should follow just in case:

• Create an evacuation plan and know at least two ways out of your neighborhood.
• Pack a “go bag” with medications, important documents, water, food, flashlights, chargers, and pet supplies.
• Sign up for local emergency alerts and monitor fire conditions regularly.
• Remove dry grass, weeds, and other flammable materials around your home.
• Keep vehicles off dry grass and avoid activities that could create sparks.

Wildfires in our area can be frightening, as seen in our recent Country Meadows fire, which burned over 1,700 acres in Kennewick. Luckily, no one was injured, and only one structure was damaged, but that’s not always the case.
