Ahh, dodgeball. The classic game of running, jumping, and throwing balls at each other has been a staple of gym classes since the dawn of recess.

It’s been a while since I’ve played a good game of dodgeball in school but even being a nerd, I actually enjoyed the game.

It’s now 2023 and it got me thinking. It’s been decades since I was in school and I’m wondering if dodgeball has gone the way of cursive, especially in Washington State.

So what’s the real story? Is dodgeball banned in Washington State public schools?

Let’s take a look:

To the best of my knowledge, dodgeball has not been banned in Washington State public schools.

However, some schools or districts may have their own policies regarding the game.

Regarding other states, I can tell you that several states have banned or restricted the use of dodgeball in physical education classes or recess.

These states include California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maine. The reasons for these bans or restrictions vary but often relate to concerns about bullying, physical injury, or exclusion of certain students from participation.

It’s worth noting that dodgeball is still played in many schools across the United States, and some educators and advocates argue that the game can have benefits for physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship when played in a safe and inclusive manner.

I did discover an interesting story going back to 2015 when a Mercer Island school tried to ban playing tag but I couldn’t find anything about the banning of dodgeball in Washington State.

There is a note that dodgeball is prohibited as a punishment in public schools.

At the end of the day, when it comes to whether or not dodgeball is still played in Washington State public schools—the answer isn’t clear cut.

Some districts have adopted policies banning it outright while others have simply modified their rules to ensure that any games played are done so safely and respectfully by all involved parties.
