WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Supreme Court announced it will hear a case on access to mifepristone, an abortion drug that was approved by the FDA in 2000.
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to restrict access to mifepristone in October, but did not revoke FDA approval of the medication, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights.
An amicus brief was filed by 257 members of congress, including Senator Patty Murray of Washington, urging the Supreme Court to hear the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA.
Senator Murray, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court announced it would hear the case:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to hear this case means they will have the opportunity to reject the unprecedented, dangerous, and illegitimate arguments made by the plaintiffs in this case.
“Beyond the truly devastating harm this case would do to women’s access to essential health care—at a time where medication abortion accounts for more than half of abortions in the U.S.—the implications for other FDA-approved medications that Americans rely on are enormous.”
