Supreme Court Declines to Hear WA Conversion Therapy Case

Posted on by admin

Monday, December 11th the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal concerning gender conversion therapy for children and minors.

The court refuses to take up the case, including the WA state appeal

According to The Center Square:

“Over the dissent of three conservative justices, the court turned away an appeal from Washington, where the law has been upheld.”

Roughly half of the U.S. states have bans on this therapy, and some have modified versions of a law, concerning the age of the person.

The WA state appeal from a 2018 case involving a family counselor named Brian Tingley, who sued against the WA state ban, claiming the law banning conversion therapy could result in a counselor losing their license if they did so.

Current WA state law forbids gender conversion therapy for those under the age of 18. The law came out of Senate Bill (SB) 5722, which bans therapy for those under the age of 18.

According to The Center Square:

“The Supreme Court had previously turned away several challenges to state bans, but those cases reached the court before a 5-4 decision in 2018 in which the justices ruled that California could not force state-licensed anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers to provide information about abortion.”

The bottom line is, the high court decline to hear an appeal to WA state’s ban for the use of the therapy on minors or children.
