SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Less than a month since the last shootout endured by Sunnyside police officers, an armed suspect was struck in the hand and hospitalized for allegedly firing at SPD authorities when contacted.
According to the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit (YVSIU), two officers from the Sunnyside Police Department responded to the 2300-block of E Yakima Valley Highway for reports of gunshots in the area.
When they arrived, officers met with an armed man — the likely culprit in the initial reports. Special investigators say the subject began to shoot at the police officers, who returned fire and struck the man in his hand. The wound was non-life-threatening and neither of the SPD officers was injured in the confrontation.

Special investigators found that these officers treated the man at the scene of the shooting until medics arrived to take over. He was then transported to Astria-Sunnyside Hospital for comprehensive care.
The names of the police officers are not being released during the earliest stages of the SIU’s process, but they do ask that anyone with further information on this case reach out to them directly. You may do so by calling Union Gap’s Lt. Stace McKinley at (509) 248-0430 or the Washington State Patrol’s Detective Lockwood at (509) 201-0093.
