SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — To celebrate those who put their lives on the line for their country, a non-profit group based in Yakima County will dedicate two new granite walls engraved with historical literature to U.S. servicemen and women on Veterans Day.
American Legion Post 73 of Sunnyside will hold a dedication for veterans at what they described as the largest Veterans Memorial in the Northwest. With 22 black granite walls weighing in over 70 tons, this memorial at Jerry Taylor Veterans Plaza in Sunnyside recently installed two more walls featuring the Declaration of Independence and lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner.
The dedication will be held on Friday, November 11 at the intersection of 9th St & Edison Ave in Sunnyside. They will begin by giving a history of Veterans Day and its significance before beginning the official dedication ceremony.
These two walls, which were installed at the memorial last June, will officially be dedicated to the veterans in an official show of respect and appreciation for their sacrifices.
Jennifer Alvarado, a music teacher at McClure Elementary School in Grandview, is scheduled to sing the National Anthem during the dedication. Once her performance and the official dedication are completed, a traditional 21-gun salute and rendition of Taps will be performed by Michelle De Boer.
White doves will be released in a show of remembrance for the Sunnyside natives who made the ultimate sacrifice when serving the country.
