Stevens County Man Fatally Shot After Shooting at Kids

Posted on by admin

A tragic situation in Stevens County Northwest of Spokane.

Man Fatally Shot After he Points Gun at Deputies

Thursday evening July 2nd, around 5:22 PM, Stevens County Deputies responded to a shooting near Tum Tum along State Route 291, about 24 miles Northwest of Spokane.

Tum Tum is a popular recreation spot for Spokane and other area residents, it’s home to Long Lake.  I recall as a college student at Whitworth University, we used to go there.

Deputies Locate Suspect in His Home

Two children who were riding a 4-wheeler, in the area, when the suspect, whose name was not released, fired a handgun, discharging several shots at them.  Fortunately, he missed.   The children, obviously terrified, fled back to their family, and when their father came back, he was confronted by the male suspect at gunpoint.

He left and called 9-1-1.  When Deputies arrived, the man was inside his residence which was nearby, in the 7200 block of SR 291.

After Firing Shots at the Children, the Man Refused to Leave His House

Deputies began to try to contact the man, without success, while others obtained a search warrant to go in. At that time, the man left the home and displayed a weapon, pointing the handgun at Deputies. He kept advancing toward the Deputies, and refused to follow commands.  One of the Officers shot him with a less lethal bean bag gun, which initially dropped him to the ground.

But then the man got back up and again aimed the firearm at Deputies, one of whom fatally shot the suspect.

The Washington State Patrol Investigative Team will now handle the incident, all information will be released by their agency.
