KENNEWICK, Wash. — It’s laser focus as these girls approach the lane and bowl.
“Bowling is really wonderful for the girls because not only is it a team sport it’s also an individual sport and the girls have to be pretty dedicated because they have to travel down here to the bowling alley,” Southridge High School Coach Kym David said.
On Thursday, the Southridge Suns took on the Hermiston Bulldogs at Sparetime Lanes in Kennewick.
Hermiston joined the WIAA Conference in 2018, which opened up athletic opportunities to students, like girls bowling.
“It’s fun to pass on that love of that sport to others,” Hermiston High School Coach Nicole Huth has a lifetime of bowling behind her.
It’s a unique sport that takes precision, and many other skills.
“Perseverance like keep going — being able to keep going even though it might be hard, you’re not always going to be good at it so just keep that repetitive practice to get better at it,” Huth said.
“It’s a great opportunity for girls who might not otherwise be involved in athletics,” David added.
Coach David is also a PE teacher at Southridge.
“It’s really exciting to see the program grow over the years and Southridge had the good fortune of getting a champion right out the gate,” she said.
Now, if you’re not as skilled at bowling like these girls are, Nicole said this is what it takes to improve.
“Repetition, making sure you’re hitting your mark staying consistent with the way that they’re throwing it, keeping their arm straight things like that,” she said.
Although both teams hope to have the winning score of the match, what they really have their eyes on is districts at the end of January.
“It’s exciting to know that not only their hard work is paying off but also my coaching and my teaching is paying to help them too and get better but it’s awesome to see them get excited when they get a strike or a spare,” Nicole said.
