If you were planning to head out for National Night Out in the Tri-Cities tonight, you may want to double-check before leaving home.
Poor air quality from wildfire smoke has forced several events to be postponed, but others are still planning to move forward.
Current air quality in the Tri-Cities has reached the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category, with the Benton Clean Air Agency reporting an AQI around 103 to 160, with smoke from wildfires burning across the Pacific Northwest.
Health officials are encouraging people to limit outdoor activity if they’re sensitive to smoke and stay inside.
Kennewick and Richland Hit the Pause Button
The City of Kennewick announced that its National Night Out event at the Southridge Sports & Events Complex has been postponed because of poor air quality.
City leaders said the decision was made to protect attendees, volunteers, vendors, public safety personnel, and staff. A new date will be announced once conditions improve.
Richland also postponed its National Night Out & City Fair at Howard Amon Park. Unlike Kennewick, Richland has already selected a makeup date. The event is now scheduled for Thursday, August 20, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Some Events Tonight Are Still Scheduled
Not every National Night Out celebration has been canceled.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office says it still plans to attend events in Prosser at EJ Miller Park and Aquatic Center from 5:30 to 9 p.m., and in Benton City at City Park from 5 to 7 p.m.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Pasco Police Department also planned to move forward with its event at the Pasco Sports Complex.
Families can still expect to meet officers, explore police vehicles, enjoy carnival games, meet Dusty and Tri-City Dust Devils players, and receive free hot dog and snow cone coupons for children while supplies last.
Check Before You Go
With smoke conditions changing throughout the day, it’s a good idea to check with your local city or law enforcement agency before heading out. If air quality worsens, additional changes may be necessary.
Hopefully, the smoke clears soon so these community events can bring neighbors together the way they were intended.
