A huge wave of international soccer excitement swept over the East Coast this week, bringing with it a legendary thirst. Thousands of Scottish soccer fans, known as the “Tartan Army,” arrived in Boston to celebrate their team’s 1-0 win over Haiti. The celebration left local bar and restaurant owners amazed as fans actually drank several places dry.

The flood of fans filled local pubs, restaurants, and tourist spots, leading to a rare mid-week business boom. At the Samuel Adams Boston Taproom, staff ran out of Boston Lager after selling about four times more than usual and had to order an emergency restock. Hennessy’s Bar saw daily sales higher than even St. Patrick’s Day. At Federal Wine & Spirits, Budweiser and Corona sold out, and one busy fridge door broke from constant use.
Up next for Scotland
With Scotland set to play Morocco in Foxborough this Friday, local bar owners are rushing to stock up.
Catching the Global Action Closer to Home
While Boston deals with the excitement, soccer fans in Washington are getting ready for their own watch parties. If you want to experience the lively international football atmosphere in the Pacific Northwest, there’s no need to head to the East Coast.

Tucked away in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood sits the George and Dragon Pub. Open since 1995, this classic, cozy English-style establishment reigns as the state’s most iconic soccer bar and a beloved hub for UK expatriates. Stepping inside reveals a beautifully well-worn, dimly lit interior packed with authentic sports memorabilia, dark wood accents, a pool table, and two expansive outdoor patios perfect for summer matches.
Whether you are there to cheer on the Sounders or catch an early morning European fixture, the vibe is unmatched. Pair the game with heavy pub classics like fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, or bangers and mash, and wash it down with a robust selection of draft beers and imported ciders. Just make sure the bartender keeps the taps flowing. Another favorite place of mine is The Owl & Thistle in Downtown Seattle. It’s located in an alleyway not far from the corner of 1st and Marion. My favorite place to grab fish & chips.
