RICHLAND, Wash. — A firearm was recovered on Monday evening near the Richland Community Center, where an unidentified individual admitted to being in a state of crisis and informed police that he hid a gun in nearby bushes.

According to a public notice from the Richland Police Department, officers were informed of the situation around 7:10 p.m. PST on Sept. 26, 2022. The subject is said to have called the authorities himself to report the situation and ask for help.

When they arrived at the public location on the 500-block of Amon Park Dr, they made contact with the man and talked it through. He was clearly in a difficult state and informed the police that his weapon was hidden in some brush somewhere near the Hampton Inn.

In order to search for the weapon safely, Richland PD called for backup from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. They dispatched a K9 to the scene to sniff for the weapon and recover it safely.

“Thank you to Benton County, WA Sheriff’s Office for helping us keep our community safe,” Richland PD stated in its online notice to the public.

The man was transported to an area hospital to be cared for due to the state of his condition. No further details regarding his status have been made public due to the sensitive nature of this incident.

This situation could’ve turned far direr had the individual not recognized his own state and called for help. As a result of his actions, no one was harmed during this response. If you find yourself in crisis, don’t do anything rash — call for help.
