News Flash • Weather Tips for Frozen Pipes

Posted on by admin

The freezing temps could cause your water pipes to freeze – we have some tips to help address this:

* Open cabinet doors under sinks to let the warmer air circulate around the plumbing

* Run a small stream of cold water in a sink

* If pipes are exposed in cold areas like attics, basements, and crawl spaces, use heat tape

* Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces

* Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor water spigots

* Keep garage doors closed

* Don’t turn off the heat if you are going to be away from home

If the pipes in your home freeze, try to thaw them out with these steps:

* Turn on the faucet. As the ice melts in the pipe, the water will begin flowing. Flowing water will help further melt the ice in the pipe

* Warm the pipes using a heating pad, hair dryer, space heater, or towels soaked in hot water. Don’t use open flames like a torch to thaw pipes

* If you can’t find the frozen pipe or can’t get the pipe thawed out yourself, you may have to call a licensed plumber for assistance
