KENNEWICK, Wash. — Special investigators offered details from their findings in relation to a police shootout and subsequent standoff at an apartment complex off W Clearwater Ave in Kennewick.
According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Kennewick detective Cory McGee recognized a known offender named Anthony Logan Martinez-Mata, 26, on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.
Authorities clarified that Martinez-Mata was wanted on out-of-state charges for several felony warrants and another charge for assault with a firearm. When contacted by Kennewick PD Officer Avery Smith, the suspect allegedly fled on foot into the Clearwater Bay Apartments on the 5200-block of W Clearwater Ave.

SIU findings show that the suspect presented a firearm and shot in the direction of the officer, who returned fire while Martinez-Mata retreated into an apartment. The resident of the apartment fled out of the back window and informed Kennewick police officers that the suspect ran into their home.
The Tri-City Regional SWAT team and SIU were called for backup. This caused traffic to be closed off for several blocks near the intersection of W Clearwater Ave and Edison St.
Negotiations were underway and eventually Martinez-Mata was brought into custody without any further incident. He was evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries at Trios Hospital and booked into the Benton County Correctional Facility.
No one else suffered injuries as a result of this altercation. From the onset, it appears that all procedures were properly followed from the onset of what Benton County/SIU officials called a “top offender round-up detail.”
