Although the election is far from over, Sen. Murray seems poised to return to the U.S. Senate seat which she’s held since 1992. This would be her sixth term in office, where she has prioritized environmental and educational programs.
Sen. Murray is the Chair of the Senate Health Committee and has been the Senate Assistant Democratic Leader since 2017.
Smiley leaned hard into right-wing politics throughout her campaign but is also relatable to many voters because of her background. She grew up on a farm in Franklin County and began her career as a triage nurse. She has dedicated much of her life to volunteering on the behalf of veterans as her husband was blinded while serving the U.S. Army in Iraq.
Votes will be finalized in the coming days as final ballots and potential recounts complete the landscape in this U.S. Senate race.
