Human Remains Found in Vehicle Near Deadly Chelan Hills Fire

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says the County Coroner is examining human remains found in a burned out vehicle.

Deputies Made the Discovery on Sunday, Along Highway 97

The Chelan Hills Fire destroyed between 100 and 200 homes, according to our sister station KPQ-AM in Wenatchee, and it burned over 10,000 acres.

Deputies were following up on a missing persons report, centered around a brush fire area alonside Highway 97 near Mile Marker 233. The location is across the Columbia River and south of Chelan. Officers said the missing person was known to be in one of the fire zones.

Officers located a vehicle near that location that had slid off the road, and was consumed by the blaze, and found human remains inside. No other details have been released, if the Coroner can make the identification, more information is expected to be released.

It’s one of the deadliest fires in the region in a number of years.
