In May, 4 high tech. Portable bathrooms were installed around the city of Seattle in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup. Two of those bathrooms are located in Pioneer Square. The company that created the bathrooms is called Throne. They are high-tech, solar powered, and with a little extra effort, portable. The portable part is good news because now they have to move the two located in Pioneer Square.
Why are they moving?
One of the Pioneer Square property owners objected to their being located near their space and asked if they could be moved, and the city said yes. Now they will be moved to another location in Pioneer Square.
Seattle spent over 500K locating the four bathrooms in the city. Which, if I’m not mistaken, makes them the most expensive “porta potties” in the world.

The restrooms are just one of Seattle’s many investments to make Downtown more comfortable and welcoming before the FIFA Men’s World Cup and for the future. During the six match days, Pioneer Square will become a walkable pedestrian zone and over 100 traditional portable toilets will be available in addition to the four provided by Throne Labs.
How do you use one?
Free access to the high-tech restrooms is controlled digitally by either scanning a QR code, using the “Throne app”, Or sending a text message. The restrooms are part of a one-year pilot program to determine practicality and durability and the city is soliciting public comment to help Seattle determine whether they are practical for future use.
