PASCO, Wash. — On Wednesday, the newest member of the Pasco Police Department gained its newest member: Community Canine Goose.
“The idea behind having Goose is, community interaction, taking him to our coffee with a cop events, just being out there – handing out ice cream, you get to play with Goose too. He’s also a bridge for us, for victims, especially children,” Sergeant Thomas Groom said.
Goose will reside inside of the Pasco Police Department, available to personnel 24/7. Sergeant Groom said Goose will occasionally go home with various PPD personnel if people within the department go on vacation, or for other instances.
“And then he’s just a general stress reliever, for the guys in the office – the guys and gals here so, he pops into your office, doesn’t matter what you’re doing, kind of got to stop and say hi to Goose,” he laughed.
The Pasco Police Foundation, according to Groom, donated the trusty Goldendoodle to the department. Goose is from Camp Doodle Woods, based out of Pasco.
“So, he was donated to the foundation specifically for this purpose, he’s getting ready to go to training, again that training has been donated by the Mattox family in Eltopia; basic obedience,” Groom said Goose’s training won’t be as extensive as emotional support or services dogs.
At 20 weeks old, Goose has free range inside the police department – free to visit with whoever and find who has the best treats.
“He’s super low key, so he’s not fazed by much, he kind of just does his own thing at his own pace,” Groom explained, “this is Goose’s home, he rules the roost, so every office is his office, and the hallways are all his.”
Groom said the canine has a tendency to lay down where he pleases.
“Everyone loves him so far; he is a puppy and he’s being very much a puppy but it’s all part of it and we love it. His moppy head sticks into the door just to check on what’s going on and you’re like, alright, this is going to be okay, so it’s a huge benefit,” Groom said the presence of Goose instantly lowers stress and tension.
