OTTAWA, Ont.-Do your Thanksgiving travel plans include crossing the border into Canada?
The Canada Border Services Agency is expecting an increase of traffic north across the border this Thanksgiving weekend and is providing travelers with some tips to keep in mind for worry-free border crossings, whether you are headed north by land, air or sea.
Holiday travel border crossing tips:
Plan your trip in advance and check the CBSA border wait times page the day of your trip.Have travel documents ready: No matter how you plan to cross the border, by land, air or sea have the documents you will need ready, including passports.Be ready to declare your items: Travelers must declare their goods when entering into Canada. Consult the CBSA website for prohibited goods.Taking a turkey? Foods brought into Canada must be retail packaged and marked for human consumption. Check the latest information regarding transporting poultry before crossing the border.Consider advance declaration: If you are flying into Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg, Halifax, Québec City, Ottawa, Billy Bishop, Calgary and Edmonton international airports, you can make customs declaration 72-hours in advance.Travelling with children: Adults crossing the border with children should have a consent letter from the child’s parents authorizing them to transport the child.Cannabis: Bringing cannabis across the border in any form without a permit is a criminal offense.
