Extremely Heavy Snowfall Closes SR 20 North Cascades Highway

So far, more than 30 inches of snow has fallen in the higher elevations.

If this is any indication of what’s to come this winter, to say, “I’m a little concerned” is an understatement. I’m terrified. I’m from Minnesota. I know how to maneuver in winter blizzards. The fact is, I don’t like to. I do love the look of snow, though.

In any case, the snow and rain together have created some seriously dangerous conditions on the western slopes, closing State Route 20 North Cascades Highway. The road is to be closed from Ross Dam Trailhead (milepost 134) to Early Winters (milepost 178).

Depending on the conditions, it’s possible that the road may be re-opened to Silver Star gate (milepost 171) for no park access for the holidays. Recreational use of the pass is available for use, however, travelers are advised to be aware of potential avalanche hazards.
