Colors That Lower Home Value

Posted on by admin

If you’re preparing to sell your house in Washington, you might spend a lot of time on landscaping or staging. However, Zillow’s new 2026 Paint Color Analysis reveals that picking the right paint color matters just as much. After surveying more than 4,400 recent and potential home buyers, researchers found that the wrong wall color could cost you thousands of dollars on your final offer.

The $18,000 Paint Mistake

Ochre yellow is the top color to avoid. Painting your kitchen, living room, bedroom, or bathroom in this dark golden-yellow shade could lower your final offer by around $18,164. Even if you use it only in the kitchen, offers can drop by $6,630. This suggests that buyers generally dislike bold, highly saturated colors.

Loud Tones to Skip: The Real Cost of Red and Pink Walls

Ochre yellow isn’t the only color that can lower your home’s value. Painting a bathroom fire-hydrant red is another common mistake, reducing the average offer by about $6,000. Pale pink is also one of the three worst paint colors nationwide, making your home less attractive to buyers and costing you money.

According to Zillow home trends expert Amanda Pendleton, the trend of using all-white, sterile walls is fading. Today’s buyers want homes with more personality and character. The right paint colors can create an instant emotional connection when buyers look at online listings, making them pause and often leading to higher offers.

The New Retro Resurgence: Earth Tones That Boost Your Offers

If you want to add value before selling, nature-inspired colors are a great choice. The report’s biggest surprise is the comeback of retro chocolate brown. Using this rich color in a bedroom can add an average of $2,227 to your home’s offer price. Charcoal gray and sage green also did very well in bedrooms, and a sage-green living room can add over $1,000 to potential offers.

The data also shows that sophisticated, moody kitchens are now popular. Choosing a bold charcoal gray kitchen can add $1,373 to your sale price, and a rich, dark plum color can add $867. Before you list your home, avoid bright yellows and fire-engine reds. Instead, choose a grounded color palette to help protect your home’s value.
