Clover Island officials said the boat launch is closed so debris and clean-up can be complete after a fire Wednesday.
KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Clover Island Boat Launch has been closed by the Department of Ecology until further notice. This is so clean-up and removal of debris can continue after a fire there Wednesday.
Two yacht club boat houses were destroyed by the flames and several other boat houses were damaged.
According to Port of Kennewick CEO Tim Arntzen, the fire was first spotted by the Port of Kennewick’s maintenance staff. The staff called 911, warned the Yacht Club and deployed the port’s spill response equipment. This response is done to contain any materials, chemicals or spilled fuel. Arntzen also praised the actions of first responders and emergency workers who quickly got to the scene.
“From the dispatchers who took the 911 call, to the Kennewick Fire Department and Kennewick Police Department, to the prompt support from Richland Fire Department, Pasco Fire Department, and Benton County Sheriff’s Office—they moved quickly to choreograph an incredibly complex fire suppression response,” Arntzen said.
It wasn’t easy fighting the fire at the marina. Arntzen said these types of fires are complex and hard to contain. Much of the blaze had firefighters battling the blaze from the water. He said it was thanks to all of the interagency cooperation that the fire was put out quickly and didn’t cause more damage.
“I witnessed a staggering number of responders working shoulder-to-shoulder and bringing all manners of tools and equipment to bear in fighting that fire,” Arntzen said.
The boat launch won’t be open until the Department of Ecology determines it to be okay. At this time the cause of the fire is under investigation.
