The GCSO says the 18-year-old victim’s vehicle somehow got stuck in a large irrigation canal chute.  Chutes help lower water flow safely without eroding dirt or canal beds.

The Man Was Trying to Free his Car With Help from His Passenger

The GCSO did not say how his car became stuck, but as he was trying to push it loose, he slipped and fell into the rushing water and was swept away.  Following the 9-1-1 call and arrival of GCSO rescuers, the man’s body was recovered about a half-mile downstream.

The victim, identified as Johnny Sanchez Mendoza, is with the County Coroner, an autopsy is planned for early this week.
