Boys & Girls Clubs member Alejandro Mercado won first place, and a gift card for $250 for her artwork inspired by astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa.
KENNEWICK, Wash. — The winners for UScellular’s 2nd annual Hispanic Heritage Art Contest in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton and Franklin Counties announced their winners at the Clubhouse.
The first place winner is Alejandra Mercado, who won the $250 gift card prize. Second place won a $250 gift card, and third won a $100 gift card.
Mercado won with her artwork inspired by astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic female astronaut to go to space.
“She’s a great member,” said Jonathan Kimsey, Branch Manager at the Kennewick Clubhouse. “Not only is she involved in Club, but she’s also involved in her high school athletics, so besides being a very talented artist, she’s also athletically gifted.”
Last month, UScellular presented to the youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs about influential STEM icons, and kicked off the art contest. The youth created original pieces of artwork to highlight Hispanic heritage. It was then voted on by the community.
