PLYMOUTH, Wash. — Firefighters from across Benton County converged at a seed & grain plant near the Washington/Oregon border for reports of a fire inside one of the structures.
KAPP-KVEW’s Rylee Fitzgerald spoke with Chief Rolland Watt of Benton County Fire & Protection District 6. He confirmed that fire crews rushed to Columbia River Seed facilities on Plymouth Industrial Rd for reports of a fire on Monday morning.
Responding agencies included his own district as well as Benton County Fire Districts 1 & 2, the Richland Fire Department and Benton County Sheriff’s Office. They learned that people were inside the facility, but not the pit, which is where the fire was sparked initially.

It has since been brought under control while fire investigators search to discover what caused the blaze. However, they confirmed that seed makes for powerful fuel, which contributed to the blaze. The pit, which is about 15 feet deep, was not completely lost in the fire.
Instead, only about a foot and a half of seed toward the bottom of the pit burned. Since the fire has been brought under control, officials anticipate that the building will be fully operational again shortly. It should be hospitable for those getting back to work.
Before that, firefighters are checking in on the electrical integrity of the structure to ensure that another fire won’t be sparked over some kind of technical malfunction.
