Social media use is widely popular across Washington and this state agency is doing a fantastic of capitalizing on that. Founded in 1957, the DNR has strived to “manage, sustain, and protect the health and productivity of Washington’s lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations.” Absent from the mission statement is any mention of “having a kick-ass social media presence.” But that’s what’s happening.
When people are asked to name a company that has a funny Twitter account, most will usually point to Wendy’s. I totally agree; I think Wendy’s is hilarious. They got into the social media game early and put in the work with dank memes before it anyone knew what a dank meme was.
But here’s the thing, though. Once the corporate world caught onto what Wendy’s was doing, more companies started doing it, often with less success. When you try too hard, it can be embarrassing. Nobody wants to end up on r/FellowKids. There’s a fine line to walk when running a social media page. How do you engage with people and spur conversations without seeming too dated or controversial?
What’s truly great to see is the implementation of their strategy, which is meme hard enough to get your message to a bigger audience. So when a state agency’s social media account is this spicy, something magical is going on. I’d gladly pay a little extra taxes to get this social media manager a raise. Well, played, DNR.
