Three senators have launched an investigation into Equifax’s reported plan to profit from work requirements in Medicaid and SNAP. This scrutiny comes in the wake of President Trump’s domestic spending package, which mandates states to verify the work, volunteer, or school attendance status of millions of low-income adults to determine their eligibility for federal aid.
Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon, alongside Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, wrote a letter to Equifax’s chief executive seeking answers about the company’s business practices.
The senators allege that Equifax has a “long history of anti-competitive behavior,” according to their letter.
A spokesperson for Equifax stated that the company will respond through proper channels.
Many states utilize an Equifax program called “The Work Number” to verify Medicaid applicants’ work hours and wages efficiently.
The New York Times, quoted in the senators’ letter, reported that Equifax often raises the price for The Work Number service.
