RICHLAND, Wash. – Two residents at Brookdale Senior Living in Richland have found an unexpected connection, defying the odds and creating a bond over their shared pasts.
Judy Alder, 77, has lived at Brookdale for nearly seven years due to health problems.
“I was having a hard time taking care of myself. I’d had some surgeries,” she said.
Judy was married for over 30 years, living in Texas and Oklahoma with her husband and only son. Her husband passed away 27 years ago, and her son died five years later.
Recently, Judy met Steven Eisenberg, a 74-year-old Air Force veteran and fellow Brookdale resident. Although they had seen each other around for over a year, it was their shared experiences that brought them closer.
“But we just had so much in common. We both have a lot of pain, and we enjoy going out and eating,” Judy said.
Steven moved to Washington in 1989 for a job that didn’t pan out. He was married for about 10 years, but his ex-wife is now in a mental hospital. Despite his past, Steven found comfort in his connection with Judy.
“When I met Steve, we started really talking. I fell in love with him,” Judy shared.
Their bond led to a proposal and eventually a wedding held at Brookdale, attended by fellow residents, staff and loved ones. Judy and Steven exchanged vows, with Judy saying, “I do.”
Their story serves as a reminder to cherish life’s moments and the power of love, even in later years.
“When you’re the sage and you fall in love, you need to get together. Because you never know when you’re not going to be here,” Judy said.
