Recovery efforts continue after a deadly canoeing accident in Grant County.
One child is dead, another is hospitalized and their father and brother are missing. The canoe accident happened Friday night at the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge near Warden.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office:
The father, age 32, and his three sons ages six, eight, and ten from Othello went to a lake at the Columbia Wildlife Refuge south of SR 262 to go fishing. Sometime before nightfall, their canoe capsized. The ten-year-old was able to make it to shore but the father and two siblings did not resurface. Family members became concerned when the group did not return and went searching for the missing. The family found the ten-year-old along the shore and called 911 summoning rescuers just before 11 pm.
The oldest son was transported to a local hospital for treatment. On Saturday morning, rescuers recovered the body of the 8-year-old son.
The father and 6-year-old boy were not recovered. Columbia Basin Dive Rescue is searching and a drone is scanning the water and shoreline.
