Freezing temperatures can put your water pipes at risk of freezing, but these simple steps can help prevent costly damage:
Prevent Frozen Pipes:
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing
- Let a small stream of cold water run from a faucet to keep water moving.
- Use heat tape on exposed pipes in cold areas like attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
- Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces for extra protection.
- Disconnect garden hoses from outside spigots.
- Keep garage doors closed to retain heat.
- If you’re leaving home, keep the heat on. Don’t turn off completely.
If Your Pipes Freeze:
- Turn of the faucet. Flowing water will help melt the ice inside.
- Apply heat using pad, hair dryer, space heater, or hot, damp towels.
- Never use open flames like a torch to thaw pipes.
Taking these precautions can help you avoid the hassle and expense of burst pipes this winter!
