OLYMPIA, Wash. – State and local agencies are barred from purchasing or acquiring drones made by foreign entities such as China or Russia if a proposed bill by Kennewick Senator Matt Boenke becomes law.
Senate Bill 5302, drafted by prime sponsor Boenke with support from Senator Nikki Torres, reflects growing concerns over national security and the influence of foreign governments in technology used by public agencies.
If passed, the bill would also prohibit public entities from operating drones produced by covered foreign entities starting July 1, 2026, six months after state and local agencies would have to abide by the law.
The bill received a first reading in Olympia, January 16. It awaits further action in the Senate Law and Justice Committee.
