In high school, my friend would say this, when driving behind someone riding their bike on the road:
“Get your bike on the sidewalk with the rest of the toys!”
Though I’d remind him the bicycler has a right to be on the road as I don’t think it’s legal for people to ride bikes on sidewalks, it got me thinking… is it illegal?
I mean, I see kids and even grown-ups do it sometimes. Sure, nobody is stopping anyone and I’m glad someone is using our sidewalks. And nice for the motorists who want to drive the speed limit as Yakima doesn’t have bike lanes.
But is riding bikes on sidewalks illegal is Washington State?
Well, yes and no. It depends.
According to RCW 46.90.010 it looks like it’s okay to ride your bike on the sidewalk so long as you’re not, like, downtown. And, of course, you have to make room for pedestrians.
Bicycles—Riding on sidewalks.
(1) No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk in a business district.
(2) A person may ride a bicycle on any other sidewalk or any roadway unless restricted or prohibited by traffic control devices.
(3) Whenever any person is riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk, such person shall yield the right of way to any pedestrian.
[Statutory Authority: RCW 46.90.010. WSR 94-01-082, § 308-330-555, filed 12/13/93, effective 7/1/94.]
So if you’re in a residential neighborhood it should be fine. Of course if you’re in a residential neighborhood chances are there’s plenty of room on the road so you won’t need the sidewalk, but good to know it sounds like an option.
According to Velotric, this also counts for class 1 and class 2 electric bikes (ebikes).
