PASCO, Wash. – Today, NonStop Local spoke with Clenesha Hurst and Naimi Chambers from the Tri-Cities Diversity & Inclusion Council, as well as Elizabeth Burtner from Columbia Basin College, to highlight two events happening in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The first event is TCDIC’s MLK Day of Service Distribution Event.
Participants can bring non-perishable foods and essential items like laundry soap and toothbrushes.
That event will be between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., Monday, January 20th. Those who wish to donate must drop-off their food on CBC’s campus, via 20th Ave and Sun Willows Blvd.
Next is the MLK Bell Ringing Ceremony, which has been a Columbia Basin College tradition since 1990. Today’s Bell Ringing Ceremony will be held on the CBC Pasco campus, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Along with the ceremony, the winner of 2025’s Spirit Award will also be selected.
“Ultimately our goal is to serve our most under-resourced and under-served community members,” said Chambers, chief executive officer for TCDIC.
Along with the events today, visitors will be able to see the exhibit currently running at CBC, which showcases the history of Black Americans brought into the Hanford Site to work some of the most grueling jobs at the plant.
Another exhibit tells the history of the Martin Luther King Jr. statue at CBC, one of the only four statues approved by the MLK Foundation.
All described events will be free and open to the public.
WSU has not just one event planned, but instead, a week full of events. That schedule can be found here.
