Kroger Foods, who operates nearly 2,800 grocery stores under various umbrellas, is adding another 197 plus 11 standalone pharmacies.
Kroger Acquires Giant Eagle
A number of years ago Kroger bought out Portland Oregon-founded Fred Meyer, and QFC, now they’re buying out another major Midwest and Mid-Atlantic chain.
Giant Eagle, who was founded in 1931, oversees 197 stores and 11 independent or stand-alone pharmacies in five states including Maryland, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.
Giant Eagle Will Not be Rebranded
The move was approved by the Kroger Board of Directors, and Giant Eagle will preserve its name and continue current operations, no stores will be re-branded or closed.
Officials say it will help strenghen their business position, as they compete heavily with Walmart, Target, and even to a degree, Costco.
Giant Eagle earnings reports show they bring in, as a whole, about $9 billion in revenue annually.
The maintaining of Giant Eagle stores is in contrast to recent moves over the last few years, when Kroger closed large Fred Meyer and QFC stores in Seattle, Kent, Mill Creek, Everett, Redmond and Tacaoma. However, those closures were due to rampant theft loss from shoplifting, and what Officials said were very challenging business conditions.
