Mario Mengarelli stepped down this week as head boys’ basketball coach at Zillah High School after 10 seasons and a 235-21 overall record following hazing allegations.
He led Zillah to three state championships and a 91% winning percentage, the best in Washington state history among coaches who have led a program for at least 200 games.
The resignation was announced on his personal Facebook page Wednesday, June 24, and made official by the Zillah School Board at their monthly meeting Thursday night following a 30-minute closed-door session.
The Coach’s Record Speaks for Itself
Ten seasons. Here is what Mengarelli built year by year at Zillah:
2016-17: 26-1, State Champions. 2017-18: 25-2. 2018-19: 26-1, State Champions. 2019-20: 22-3. 2020-21: 14-1. 2021-22: 22-5. 2022-23: 25-2. 2023-24: 27-0, State Champions. 2024-25: 22-5. 2025-26: 26-1, State Runners-Up.
235 wins and only 21 losses. Zero technical fouls in his entire coaching career. That last detail is worth sitting with for a moment.
What Mengarelli Said on His Way Out
Mengarelli did not leave quietly. His Facebook post was honest, reflective, and worth reading. He acknowledged the mental weight of coaching teenagers, the year-round commitment, the worry about players’ home lives, the emotional toll of relying your well-being on the decisions of 14-to 18-year-olds.
“All I can say is the data is in, and the legacy is cemented,” he wrote. “Seen lots of coaches take a lot of talent and not bring home any gold balls.”
He also addressed future players directly, “I know what it takes to compete for a state championship, and I don’t have that in me at this point of my life.”
The Circumstances Behind the Resignation are Still Unknown
The departure of the coach is not a surprise after seeing signs months ago or Facebook profile pictures appearing around Zillah with the message “I Stand With Our Coaches”. Those were obvious signals that something was brewing beneath the surface.
Even now, there are not many details about the case, obviously because it involves minors.
The school board confirmed a third-party investigation took place into alleged misconduct involving hazing in the boys’ basketball program. Assistant coach Sebastian Godina also resigned alongside Mengarelli.
The school board’s only listed agenda item Thursday night was “Personnel,” and no other details about the investigation have been made public.
Mengarelli said in his post that he is heading to his horses, his Broken Arrow Quarter Horses operation, and plans to focus on his family, hunting, fishing, and riding.
