The invasive and destructive emerald ash borer has been found at three new locations in Oregon: Tualatin, north of Newberg and north of Silverton.
“Research has shown they can fly up to ten miles on their own, but usually how they are spread is through people transporting firewood from one area to another,” said Matt Mills with the Oregon Department of Forestry.
The adults lay eggs under the bark and the larvae kill the tree by boring into it.
“There are a lot of pests, not just emerald ash borer, that are transported through us moving firewood around,” Mills said. “So we like to tell people: buy it where you burn it.”
