Illegal Drone Fliers Arrested During USA-Australia World Cup Game

Posted on by admin

For weeks, even a few months, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and Seattle law enforcement warned the public about the no-fly zones for drones as the World Cup approached.

But, some people…

Multiple Arrests Made During USA,. Australia game

As a testament to the relatively well-behaved crowds (tens of thousands) who crowded Lumen Field and Downtown Seattle during the game between the US and Australia, only four reported arrests were made by Seattle PD.  2 were for trespassing, and the other two offenders will probably be facing bigger penalties.

The other two were caught piloting drones illegally over and around the secure area near the field.  For safety reasons, and fears of attacks or crime, drone use was banned within a few miles of every US soccer venue during the World Cup.

Some Drones were Permitted, for TV and Coverage Purposes

Much like during the Seahawk’s Super Bowl Parade, where several dozen ‘illegal’ drones were seen buzzing around,  Seattle Police located and arrested 2 pilots, and took their drones too.

The FAA, even aside from the World Cup, takes illegal drone flights seriously.  Some offenders who’ve flown them near military bases or airports have been fined in excess of $50K, and a few back east even got jail time.

But apparently some people think they’re exempt–at least until they got caught.
